چکیده

Representing information evolving in time in ontologies is a difficult problem to deal with. Temporal relations are in fact ternary (i.e., properties of objects that change in time involve also a temporal value in addition to the object and the subject) and cannot be handled directly by OWL. The standard solution to this problem is to map all temporal relations to a set of binary ones with new (intermediate) classes introduced by the temporal model applied. Nevertheless, ontologies then become complicated and difficult to handle by standard editors such as Protégé (e.g., property restrictions of temporal classes might refer to the new classes rather than to the classes on which they were meant to be defined). It also requires that the user be familiar with the peculiarities of the temporal representation. This is exactly the problem this work is dealing with. We introduce CHRONOS Ed, a plug-in for Protégé that enables handling of temporal ontologies in Protégé the same way static ontologies are handled. It is implemented as a Tab plug-in for Protégé and can be downloaded from the Web.

FONTE - A Protégé Plugin for Engineering Complex Ontologies by Assembling Modular Ontologies of Space, Time and Domain Concepts

Humans have a natural ability to reason about scenarios including spatial and temporal information but for several reasons the process of developing complex ontologies including time and/or space is still not well developed and it remains a one-off, labor intensive experience. In this paper we present FONTE (Factorising ONTology Engineering complexity), an ontology engineering methodology that ...

CHRONOS: A Reasoning Engine for Qualitative Temporal Information in OWL

We propose CHRONOS, a system for reasoning over temporal information in OWL ontologies. Representing both qualitative temporal (i.e., information whose temporal extents are unknown such as “before”, “after” for temporal relations) in addition to quantitative information (i.e., where temporal information is defined precisely e.g., using dates) is a distinctive feature of the proposed approach. Q...

Ontology is a useful tool for organizing resources and on the other hand is a useful tool for the knowledge representation. With the development of Semantic Web technologies, build and create ontologies to expedite the process, it is necessary. The aim of study is explaining the situation methodology, designing scientometrics conceptual model, and steps of its ontology construction as Scientome...

The OWL Explanation Workbench: A toolkit for working with justifications for entailments in OWL ontologies

In this article we present the Explanation Workbench, a library and tool for working with justification-based explanations of entailments in OWL ontologies. The workbench comprises a software library and Protégé plugin. The library can be used in standalone OWL API based applications that require the ability to generate and consume justifications. The Protégé plugin, which is underpinned by the...
